Call me stoopid (most people only do it once) but i dont understand. Can someone explain the rankings and the defending money bit please?

you have 2 years not defending the money you win..........then after the 2 years,all the comps u won money in over the 2 years next time u play in that comp u must equal or better it......say u won the north west uk open £5000,2 years on and u went out in 1st round and picked up nowt u would lose £5000 out your ranking moneys......
